UM24-03: Application Decision-making for SSI for Children: A Qualitative Study with Beneficiary and Nonbeneficiary Families

Researchers

Abstract

The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program of the Social Security Administration provides an important safety net to families of children with severe disabilities who meet specific income and asset criteria. Yet the number of children served by the program has gradually declined since 2013 which is not yet well understood. Little is known about how individuals and families navigate the complex and lengthy process of deciding to file for benefits. This study aims to fill this gap. Ultimately, the study can provide important insights to bolster Social Security’s mandated outreach efforts to eligible populations.
