UM20-01: Understanding Trends in DI Applications with Survey and Administrative Data
Researchers
Abstract
The decision to apply for DI is based on the interplay between one’s health, the demands of one’s job, employer accommodations, and the ability to find a new job that better matches health status and job demands. In the proposed research, we explore how changes in the job demands and in the employment opportunities faced by older workers affect demand for DI benefits. Understanding how dramatic changes in the work environment affect demand for DI will inform policymakers’ projections of applications for and awards of DI benefits.
