David Stapleton
Senior Fellow, Mathematica Policy Research
David Stapleton (Ph.D., Economics, University of Wisconsin) is a senior fellow at Mathematica Policy Research and former director of the Center for Studying Disability Policy at Mathematica. For the past 17 years, Dr. Stapleton’s work has focused on the impacts of public policy on the employment and income of people with disabilities. He is Research Director and co-PI for the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (RRTC) on Employment Policy Research, and the Associate Director and co-PI for the RRTC on Disability Statistics and Demographics, both under subcontracts from Cornell University. He is also currently co-PI for SSA’s evaluation of the Ticket to Work program and for the Benefit Offset National Demonstration. He is co-editor of two books on disability policy, Growth in Disability Benefits: Explanations and Policy Implications (1998, with Kalman Rupp), and The Decline in Employment of People with Disabilities: A Policy Puzzle (2003, with Richard Burkhauser). He is also co-editor of Counting Working-Age People with Disabilities: What Current Data Tell Us and Options for Improvement. (2009 with Andrew Houtenville, Burkhauser, and Robert Weathers, II) and co-author of five of its chapters.
Dr. Stapleton joined MPR in 2007 from his previous position as the Director of Cornell University’s Institute for Policy Research. He has previously been a Senior Vice President at The Lewin Group, and held tenured appointments at both Dartmouth College and the University of Maryland, College Park.
