Pierre-Carl Michaud

Professor of Applied Economics

Pierre-Carl Michaud (Ph.D., Economics, Tilburg University, Netherlands 2005) is a professor of applied economics and director of the Retirement and Savings Institute at HEC Montréal. He is an adjunct economist at the RAND Corporation and  was previously an associate professor in the economics department at the Université du Québec à Montreal. He is also a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA, Bonn, Germany).

Most of his work focuses on the joint behavior of couples, whether looking at their labor supply decisions, their decisions to claim social security benefits, and the relationship between their savings and their health. His work draws extensively on data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) using cross-sectional and panel data methods that involve the estimation of dynamic discrete choice models with simulation techniques.
