Estelle James was a Professor Emeritus, State University of New York at Stony Brook and Consultant to the World Bank, USAID and other organizations when she died in 2015.

Dr. James influenced a debate on pension reform across the world. Her work concentrated on international comparisons of public-private sector interactions in the provision of education and the role of the third sector—non-profit, non-governmental organizations. She received her BS from Cornell University and her Ph. D. from MIT.
