The Enduring Impacts of COVID-19 on Americans’ Economic and Retirement Security

Published: 2023
Project ID: UM23-13

Abstract

This project builds on our previous work by using newly collected data to examine how Americans’ economic and retirement security have changed during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our analysis will examine (1) how the long duration of the pandemic and the removal of pandemic relief programs have impacted Americans’ financial stability; (2) the interaction of the pandemic’s effects with the recent increase in inflation; and (3) how the disparate burden of COVID-19 infection and hospitalization has influenced racial and ethnic disparities in economic and retirement security. Throughout the project, we will pay particular attention to how older workers are faring in the aftermath of the pandemic and document heterogeneity in impacts on economic and retirement security by race and ethnicity.
