Changing Work Demands and Compositional Changes in Occupations: Effects on Expected Retirement

Efforts to identify reasons for the reversal in the trend toward earlier retirement have yielded insights about, among other things, the roles of insurance, pensions, and Social Security. Less attention has been paid to the potential impact of occupational changes, especially resulting from technological innovations like computerization. This project uses information on occupations and work characteristics in the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) linked to detailed occupational information in the Occupational Information Network (O*NET) project database to describe compositional changes in the occupations, skills, and demands of jobs held by HRS respondents over 20 years, and to relate these changes to expectations of working past age 62 and past age 65.
