Dr. Schoeni was a Research Professor at the Institute for Social Research and Professor of Economics and Public Policy, University of Michigan when he died in 2021. He moved to the University of Michigan in 2001 from RAND, where he was an economist starting in 1992. Schoeni served as a Senior Economist on the Council of Economic Advisers, White House, 1998-99. He studies labor economics, the family, aging, health, disability and survey methods. Recent studies include the investigation of population level trends in old-age health status and disability over time in the US, England, China, and Thailand; the effects of various data collection protocols on survey response rates and data quality; intergenerational transfers between parents and adult children; the impact of health shocks on migration and poverty; and the connection between socioeconomic status and health. He has been a member of the study team leading the Panel Study of Income Dynamics since 2001, and he served as Co-Director of the study from 2009 through 2012.
