Abstract

Hispanics in the United States have high rates of disability, yet data has shown that awareness of the Social Security disability programs is lower than average among Hispanics. To date, little is known about the challenges, barriers, and facilitators faced by Hispanics in applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). This proposal is for a comprehensive mixed-methods study to understand the experiences of Hispanics who apply for SSDI or SSI. The study aims to provide important insights to bolster Social Security’s communication and outreach efforts to eligible but under-served populations. It will also involve community input to inform improvements in ongoing and future data collection on the specific needs and preferences of minority and under-served groups.
