This proposal seeks to examine the eligibility and participation of refugees in the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program in the United States. Using newly available data from the Annual Surveys of Refugees, with comparisons to the American Community Survey, we will provide nationally representative estimates of the refugee population potentially eligible for SSI and examine disparities in program access and continued benefit receipt based on key socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. We will increase understanding of how eligible refugees access SSI benefits and shed light on barriers that may hinder their participation in crucial social safety net programs.
