Kathleen McGarry

Kathleen McGarry (Ph.D., Economics, SUNY Stony Brook, 1992) is Undergraduate Vice Chair and Professor of Economics at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is also a research associate with the NBER and previously served as a senior economist at the Council of Economic Advisers. Professor McGarry’s research focuses on the well-being of the elderly with particular attention paid to public and private transfers, including the Medicare and SSI programs, and the transfer of resources within families. Professor McGarry’s research combines work on the financial aspects of aging with issues related to health economics to examine issues of sufficiency of care and levels of resources among the elderly. Her current work is focused on long term care issues including long term care insurance, out of pocket expenses and the role of the family in providing care.
