UM06-05: Planning and Financial Literacy: How Do Women Fare?

Researchers

Abstract

Many households in the US have done little or no planning for retirement. Women represent a disproportionate share of non-planners, and there is much concern about how female-headed households will fare after retirement. To gain a better insight on these issues, the author and Olivia Mitchell have devised and fielded a new module for the 2004 Health and Retirement Study on planning and financial literacy. Data from this module will allow the assessment of which tools and sources of information women use when making saving decisions. Moreover, it will assess whether lack of financial literacy represents an important obstacle for planning and saving for retirement among this group of the population where saving is most scarce.
