UM23-19: Job Demands, Time Use, and the Timing of Retirement

Researchers

Abstract

A large body of research examines the role of job demands in determining the timing of retirement, with mixed findings. However, this research does not account for the potential sorting of individuals into jobs with different demands and examines work activities separately from leisure activities, even though these activities are related and jointly determine labor supply decisions. This project will fill this gap in the literature by exploiting novel data to estimate a structural causal model of job demands, time use and the timing of retirement.
